Those “seasonal” feelings of Anxiety are REAL

All this talk about slowing down, shorter days, metabolism and how to curb your eating…. The feelings of depression and anxiety the change of seasons bring are REAL.

Curling up (maybe with a glass of wine?) and avoiding cold weather, phone calls from friends, favorite sports.. we know it’s not the best way to handle our emotions.

But what to do? Well first off, find the light ✨ A light box can help first thing in the morning when it’s still dark as midnight!

If there’s any light in the sky, get outside without glasses, even for 5 minutes and soak it up. Even better? Go for a short walk, nature, fresh air, the feeling of accomplishment will all increase that serotonin you need in your brain! 🧠

Don’t like being cold? We live in Vermont, get the proper outerwear! Buy yourself that long jacket and warm boots (bonus retail therapy! 🧥)

Exposing yourself to light AND to cold temps does wonders for your mind AND your physiology (think anti-fragile!).

Speaking of your mind, it’s a powerful tool! Reframe your thinking around winter… instead of deliberating with “I hate winter” ❄️ try saying “I prefer summer.” ☀️

And lastly, be aware when you are using comfort foods and drink to ease these negative emotions 🍩🍹 Do you feel better after? Most likely not, and now you’ve added to the stress you were trying to avoid with guilt. Again, reframe how food and drink will heal your body and choose the ones that make you feel good inside and out! 🍎🥛

Aaaand if you’re like me, just put up a shitload of small twinkly lights and candles to ward off the long dark night 🕯️🎄
