When No means Yes

“When you say yes to one thing, you are saying no to something else.”

~Georgie Fear, author of Lean Habits for Lifelong Weight Loss

Zoom out your perspective, try saying YES to things in your life that align with your values, who you are, who you want to be, what you aim for.

What are you saying YES to? Try reframing your mindset, instead of saying no to a night of alcohol and little sleep, you are saying YES to waking up feeling good and ready to go the next morning. Instead of saying no to a third Netflix episode, you are saying YES to moving your body and getting outside. Instead of telling yourself no to the entire dessert table at the party, say YES to having a treat and enjoying it.

But let’s back up, let’s play a little game to clearly establish our value system. Andy Galpin, PhD, in episode 4 of a 6-series podcast with neurologist Andrew Huberman, takes us through the process of establishing goals, and designating numeric importance to a set of values, or buckets. I recently posted an exercise on IG here, which takes you through a similar process, to define values and allocate the current amount of energy you are giving to each.

Step back and look at your daily life, recognize your current season, or phase of life, and allocate the right amount of energy to the right things. Are you living in a balanced alignment with your values? Balance is the key word, as your center will migrate depending on what is most important at the present time.

These values will guide you in your choices, and you will feel a sense of calm and contentment, knowing why you are saying Yes and why you are saying No. This can be felt in every facet of your life, because every facet of your life comes back to your health.
